(Some of) The Best Album Titles Ever (maybe)

Throughout the years, I’ve run across some albums that were just so brilliantly titled that I had to buy them. There were times when the music turned out to be disappointing, of course, but a snazzy title will grab my attention every single time.

So, what are the best titles of all time? Well, that’s a highly subjective thing and my criteria on judging titles is pretty basic. First of all, it’s got to be a hoot. Rock and roll bands have generally taken themselves too seriously and have generally tried to come across with heavy, philosophical album titles (or, at least, ones that they thought were cool). It’s refreshing to run across a band that slaps a title on an album that causes all who see it to come to one conclusion – these guys have a sense of humor. I’m a sucker for a sense of humor.

Here’s what I mean. My brother and I once formed a fictional band called Hate Magnet. We figured we’d jump right into the fray by releasing a couple of overblown concept albums to kick off our careers. The first one was to be called “I, Pimp,” whereas the second was to be called “The Pimp and I” so as to offer a different perspective. Funny, huh? Well, we thought so.

Second, in order for an album to make my “top titles” list, I must have actually heard of it. That means we’re going to be looking at albums that came out primarily in the 1980s and 1990s.

Ready? Here’s the list.

Disgraceland

1. Elvis Hitler, Disgraceland (1988). Elvis Hitler never exactly hit the big time, but the thrashy-punky Detroit rockers have to be given credit for a gem of an album title. As if pairing Elvis and Adolph Hitler weren’t enough, the band had to just bring the point home by mangling the name of Elvis Preley’s house.

3rdreich

2. The Residents, The Third Reich ‘N Roll (1976). The title is a hoot and the cover is even better (Dick Clark dressed in a German military uniform while holding a carrot?) There are only two songs on this album – both meander on for about 20 minutes as the Residents simply mangle classic hit after classic hit in the time-honored medley format. It’s an odd listen, but what else would one expect from The Residents?

90sSuck

3. The Angry Samoans, The 90s Suck & So Do You (1999). “Metal” Mike Saunders, a proud Little Rock, Ark., boy, had his finger on the pulse of an entire decade with this particular title. The 90s did suck, indeed, and we’d be wise to never forget it. By the way, this old Arkansas boy can’t help but love the illustration of Saunders on the cover – a Razorback shirt, a guitar boldly proclaiming that the SEC Rules and the “Hog Man” scrawl are all awesome in my book. The music isn’t bad, either, although the once hardcore Angry Samoans sound more like a pop-punk band that’s been influenced by Screeching Weasel than one of the most prolific members of the West Coast hardcore punk movement in the 1980s.

meatmen

4. The Meatmen, We’re the Meatmen… And You Suck!! (1983). Here’s a title that pegs the music on the album perfectly. You’ve got a loud, sloppy guitar, thudding drums, a bass that breaks through the murk every now and again and Tesco Vee offending everyone in earshot. This album is mostly live and it’s obvious that Vee both loves to taunt the audience and doesn’t take things too seriously. It’s all pretty much what you’d expect from a band that was responsible for the suck trilogy – Crippled Children Such, French People Suck and Camel Jockeys Suck. The music isn’t that great, but the packaging is pure gold.

WeaselFriends

5. Screeching Weasel, How to Make Enemies and Irritate People (1994). Here’s the perfect album title from Ben Weasel and his gang of snot-nosed, Ramones-loving punks. The fun doesn’t stop with the album title – with songs like “I Hate Your Guts on Sunday” and “Nobody Likes You,” you pretty well know that to expect with this one.

New Duncan Imperials - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vegas - 1997

6. The New Duncan Imperials, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vegas (1997). What a title! What an album! The lads – Pigtail Dick, Skipper Zwakinov and Mr. Goodtime Dammit – were at the top of their game here. By the way, if you haven’t heard the all-over-the-map stylings of the New Duncan Imperials, you are missing out on a band that was one of the must unique acts going the 1990s. Guitarist Pigtail Dick professed a great love of Foghat and that explains everything.

Dead Milkmen - Beelzebubba

7. The Dead Milkmen, Beelzebubba (1988). The Dead Milkmen ran out of ideas after a time, but the band was at the top of its game here. Listening to these punks mock one thing after another was great fun. Sadly, the party was over after this one – it was all downhill from here.

It's a sad day for Monkees fans as Davy Jones is dead at the age of 66-years-old. Enjoy a clip of him in his prime. Hey, hey...

Music Monday – The Last Men

A great band that gigged around New York for awhile, recorded a single and then vanished. What? What happened? Were the Last Men too far ahead of the times, too cool or too disturbing? Who knows? The band did release “The Word” and “Jimmy Igo,” so enjoy!

An achievable New Year’s resolution

television-rep-des-livres

Yes, it’s another year and we’ve got a slew of people running around making resolutions they’ll never keep.

Ah, but not me. No, The Hawg has made a New Year’s resolution that I am almost certain to keep. Am I going to exercise more, lose weight, give it my all at work or anything like that?

No. I’m going to take it easy on myself this year. I, then, hereby resolve to watch even more television that I did in 2009.

Now, there’s a resolution that will take some focus and dedication. I’m sure, however, that I will be able to watch more TV if I just put my mind to it. That won’t be overly easy, of course, as the television is generally own and I’m in front of it unless I’m at work or sleeping.

There are a couple of things I can do, however, to achieve my goal. For one thing, I could sleep in front of an active television set, couldn’t I? There’s one in the bedroom, after all, and I did fall into the habit of falling asleep in front of the television and waking up in time to watch a rerun of Gilligan’s Island back when I was in college.

I could certainly fall back into that habit with little effort. Sounds like a plan.

Also, I do have some vacation time coming. Why waste it on doing things that would get me out of the house? Heck, I could simply take a couple of weeks off and spend them in my living room in front of that huge, flat screen television set that we bought last year.

Yes, we’ll see people fall short of their resolutions right and left this year. I, however, will be a success story.

Go ahead an enjoy the Boogie Boys video I’ve posted below. Not only does it have some dandy television references, it is also a song that could have only been recorded in the 1980s – my favorite decade.

Music Monday -- “White Girl” by X

Christmas is over and that absolutely stinks. What better way to cheer up than listen to one of the finest songs from X (and, yes, that is Ray Manzarek from the Doors producing)? Enjoy!

Music Monday - Haunted

One of the best purchases I’ve made in some time is the Behringer Guitar Link.

Why? I can plug my guitar and bass into that little device, run it through the USB port on my computer and record and mix tracks all day long. As I’ve mentioned a time or two, I have decided to use free software to record my stuff. I do rather suck at guitar, after all, so why spend a lot of money on amp models and the like when I can find what I need for free?

Of course, when I say free, I’m not talking about pirated or anything like that. Click one of those links up there to find out about some of the open source stuff I’ve found.

I have an obnoxious tendency to post something here whenever I do find a cool, free thing I can use for recording. An application I downloaded the other day is the HammerHead Rhythm Station.

That’s an easy to use drum machine that sounds pretty good when you install the acoustic samples (you’ll find more details at the above link). Want to hear it in action? Just click the “play” button on the DivShare thingie above to hear something I wrote that would sound even worse without the HammerHead drum machine and a set of acoustic drums samples.

All I had to do was program in my beat, stream it as a WAV file to my computer, loop it through Audacity, load it into my Kristal Audio Engine mixer and record two guitar tracks and a bass track around it.

One of the coolest free guitar suites out there?

As I’ve mentioned a time or two on here, I bought a Behringer Guitar Link not too long ago and have been recording tracks on my computer ever since then (click the player above to hear my latest bit of nonsense).

I wanted to get a free mixer and some VST plug-ins for amplifiers (all of that is detailed here) as I figured on finding what was available at no cost before jumping into buying expensive amp modelers and such. I’m happy to report that there is a lot of great stuff available for absolutely free and that anyone with a modern computer and a Behringer Guitar Link can find more effects and guitar models than you can shake a stick at.

One of the best free packages I’ve found out there is the SimulAnalog Guitar Suite (click the link to read more about it and hear some tracks generated with it). Truth be told, the suite models the Marshall JCM900 Dual Reverb and that’s the only thing I use (I’ve got the modeled Fender Twin and the distortion pedals covered with other packages).

That Marshall model is fantastic, indeed. When you combine that with the D.I.G. suite from AcmeBarGig, you’ve got a heck of a lot of range at your fingertips.

Want proof? I’ve attached the above clip to show you what I mean. The lead and distorted chords in the chorus were recorded through the aforementioned JCM900 model and the rhythm guitar track was recorded through a rockabilly setting in the D.I.G. suite (because that “slap back” echo is too cool, but fret not – that D.I.G. suite can get as heavy, distorted and filthy as you want it). The bass track was recorded through the FreeAmp3 package from Fretted Synth (also free).

My guitar is a Fender Stratocaster Deluxe (the only thing in my setup that cost any real money) and my bass is some cheap copy of a Fender Jazz Bass.

Who says you’ve got to spend a lot of money to get good tone? Enjoy the clip!

Welcome aboard, young Samuel Kirk Nobles!

SamuelKirkWell, my little brother Zack and his wife Alev now have two children running around the house.

Well, their oldest son – Isaac – is running. Samuel Kirk was born just this week, so I doubt he’s doing much of anything other than crying, eating and being – well – a baby.

The little nipper was born at 4:16 a.m. on Oct. 26 and weighed 6 pounds, 13 ounces (he was a few days early). Oddly, my brother and his wife didn’t name the kid until about Wednesday and that came after months of struggling to find a name.

We’re glad to see young Samuel and – as you can see from the photo above – he seems healthy enough (and notice how tired my brother looks). With Alev and Zack in charge, I have no doubt he’ll grow into a fine young man before long. Those two can take care of all problems from “A” to “Z",” after all. Heh. “A” to “Z.” Zack and Alev. Funny stuff.

It’s late and I’m tired, so have a little mercy, huh?

A fascinating thing about this kid is that my brother and sister-in-law opted to have him at home. That sounded a bit on the pioneerish side, but the child was delivered with no problems and Alev got to rest comfortably at home instead of in a hospital. Perhaps those two knew what they were doing.

I love the middle name of “Kirk,” too. Every time I hear that, I’ll think of the Spizzenergie song in the below video:
