Where the heck is my boysenberry syrup?

There are times when it's time to stand up, look the kaiser straight in the monocle and say, "Nien!"

And, yes, I'm aware I stole that line from Mr. Burns on The Simpsons.

Folks, this is one of those times. For about a year now, I've been missing IHOP's boysenberry syrup. Yes, IHOP has removed the iconic boysenberry syrup from their tables.

I've been waiting for it to come back, but I'm afraid it's all in vain. I do ask about it from time to time and get the same response from the waitresses at the IHOP here in Benton, Ark. -- the restaurant chain has removed boysenberry syrup and it's not coming back. Ever.

Your good friend, The Hawg, can take a lot of things. Oh, I can stand my beloved Benton Panthers struggling away and can even tolerate the Arkansas Razorbacks playing like absolute garbage.

But choking down a stack of pancakes covered with some miserable trash like plain old maple syrup, that nasty butter pecan, blueberry or even strawberry is simply more than I can take. An IHOP pancake without wonderful, wonderful boysenberry syrup is like a dog without fur or a bicycle without a chain. It's just plain wrong. WRONG!

However, we still live in a consumer-driven economy and, as such, we have the power to change the minds of those people at IHOP who decided to cruelly do away with that wonderful boysenberry syrup. Yes, people -- you and I don't have to sit back and let this happen.

"But, The Hawg. I, too, am upset about IHOP's cruel actions. Maple is far too common and that butter pecan is just nasty. What can I do about it? I'm only one person?"

What can you do? Let IHOP know how you feel! Just click right here, pick the appropriate area of IHOP to send an e-mail to and fill out the form. Here's a copy of the e-mail I sent mere moments ago:

"I've been patiently waiting for about a year for IHOP to wise up and bring back that fantastic, iconic boysenberry syrup. Where's my boysenberry? If I have to choke down another stack of pancakes covered with common maple, blueberry, strawberry or that wretched butter pecan, I may lose my mind.

Besides, it's just sad that we're on the verge of raising an entire generation that won't get to experience the joys of boysenberry. That's a shame, folks. A true shame.

Please bring back boysenberry. Do it for my sanity. Do it for the children."

Ah, yeah! That ought to get some response, huh?

I hope everyone reading this will join me in asking IHOP to bring back boysenberry. Together, we can make a difference.

Have you asked them why took it away to begin with? I've never had boysenberry syrup but I think I should try it knowing you feel so strongly about it.

Imitationangel -- I asked, but they weren't sure why. I think they're trying to hide the truth!

dd877 -- Awww, come on. You know you want the boysenberry.

I droped a line in support. I hope you get your syrup back. I am a fan of the maple on my sausage

Lot2Learn -- I appreciate that! Should we get enough e-mails to IHOP, the tide will turn.

Oh, yes!

You brought Jeff Foxworthy to his knees. IHOP doesn't know the power and influence of the Hawg.

Interesting ... I never heard of boysenberry though .. well, a search in Wikipedia reveals that it is a cross between raspberry and the Pacific blackberry.

Honestly, I've never seen it. Good luck in having your syrup back. By the way, why not making it yourself?

Wow I used to go to IHOP with my parents all the time... Boysenbeery was my flavor too.

da old man -- I'll probably engage in the behavior I learned back when I was a reporter -- pester the hell out of them until I get a response.

Oh, yes. They'll answer for their blasphemous conduct. Getting rid of boysenberry. The very idea...

myi4u -- I'd make it myself if I had any practical skills.

Sadly, I don't.

michelle gartner -- Jump on the bandwagon, then! Demand that they bring back that dandy syrup.

In support of your love for boysenberry syrup, I submitted the form to IHOP - begging and pleading for them to bring it back! :)

I have never tried the boysenberry syrup and could not tell you what a boysenberry even tastes like. However, in a show of support, I am requesting that iHop not only Bring Back the Boysenberry but also introduce to its finer-palated clientele a selection of syrups in lingonberry, marionberry, gooseberry, and dingleberry.

You're welcome.

The IHOP is the extent of Obama's experience and knowledge of foreign affairs.

And I hope you do, indeed, get back your boysenberry syrup.

I went to the website and requested boysenberry be brought back and expressed my disbelief that they would discontinue such a great syrup! Good luck! :-)

Hawg! I let IHOP know that they should bring boysenberry syrup...

"Thank you for taking the time to contact IHOP. Your feedback is important and valuable to us. If your inquiry requires a response, our commitment is to contact you within two business days."

I've seen on tv, or rather people in tv or in the movies or, sitting in a restaurant who have brought their own condiments or utensils. I have a friend who carries her own tea bags and just orders hot water.

Maybe in meantime, maybe you can bring your own boysenberry syrup to enjoy your pancakes?

I was also dismayed to learn that boysenberry syrup was being taken off the table (pun intended), but the blueberry is actually pretty good.

laura -- God bless you! Yes, our voices will be heard!

JD -- I appreciate the shotgun approach. You're approaching this like a negotiation, are you?

"You know, that 'I Do Things' woman has a lot of unreasonable requests here. But, boysenberry is pretty reasonable..."

Carole -- Thank you! With all these demands, how can IHOP refuse? We'll have 'em on the ropes, folks!

Paul -- Heh, always there with the conservative zinger, huh? Sadly, I suspect you are right...

ms o.d. -- I might give that a shot, provided I can find something that's even close to the super duper boysenberry syrup that IHOP used to have.

Thanks for joining my righteous cause, by the way...

mark -- I was absolutely crushed when they got rid of boysenberry.

Blueberry? Surely you jest! You can get blueberry down at the Waffle House.

Phooey!

Yeah, I'm almost 40 and I'm getting that old man crankiness down. I'll be sitting out in the lawn and yelling at kids next...

Hey I've been doing some work trying to get our beloved boysenberry back, and hopefully some of you will sign my petition that can be found at

Thanks!

This is the response I got back:
Thank you for writing. Boysenberry syrup continues to be an approved item for our restaurants. We have six approved syrups and our franchise owners are required to offer at least four of them. We believe that our franchise owners are in the best position to understand the needs of their guests. I am sorry that the location you are visiting is not offering them. Please let the management of this location know of your fondness for this syrup to determine if they can offer it. Thank you.

In my area we could get it if you asked the waiter. But yesterday we discovered a new ihop & tried them out. I as usual requested my boysenberry for my pancakes. What came looked & tasted nothing like boysenberry. It resembled watered down blueberry & tasted like watered down grape. I called the waitress back to ask if perhaps I had been accidentally given the wrong syrup. But she instead tried to assure me it was boysenberry. She offered to have a fresh stack of pancakes made, lol, but I've seen enough TV to know the response to that question is no thank you. So from now on I think I will walk with my own Boysenberry. If I find I am not satisfied with what they provide, I will still enjoy my meal by pouring my own.

Now this is what being an American is all about. You can't even buy Knott's/Smuckers boysenberry syrup any more. I saw it on-line for $30. I had a boysenberry Icee at Knott's Berry Farm a few years ago and it was the best Icee I've ever had.

I was at IHOP in Williston Long Island today. Boysenberry was there waiting for me. Unbelievable and delicious.

I looooved the Boysenberry syrup at iHop as a kid. I haven't seen it in more than 50 years! Fox and Friends, just now, had a rep from iHop making pancakes and telling about the new ones on the menu. She claimed they still have Boysenberry Syrup --- where??? Is it now a 'regional thing'? I would love to have my local restaurant (in Mass.) bring it back---but would it just sit on the tables since few remember it???
