(Almost) Wordless Wednesday -- "White Girl" by X

For my money, X was one of the greatest bands of the 1980s but was recognized as such by only a select few.

Yes, D.J. Bonebrake (drums) Exene Cervenka (wailing vocals), John Doe (bass and vocals) and Billy Zoom (amazingly awesome guitar) never got the credit they deserved.

So, here's a video of them recording one of their best songs. And, yes, that is former Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek running the board -- he produced a couple of albums for X.

Stop thinking of X as just another punk band, now. X was an incredibly good rock and roll band, period.

Turn those speakers up loud and enjoy!

I liked it. I had never heard of X or this song. Thanks for my morning music...

Yeah, I'm surprised I never heard of them either.

I would say this is back in the CBGB days, huh. This is Punk Rock, a nice fusion of both. And after all, The Ramones (as was Blondie) were classified as Punk Rock.

No, not Sid and Nancy, but Punk Rock nonetheless.

FishHawk -- Ah, come on! X is the coolest...

Toni -- You're welcome. That particularly song is from Wild Gift, X's second LP. That's a good one, as is their first disc (Los Angeles). X had a lot of great stuff, but the first two albums remain my favorite.

Lala -- Well, X was from the West Coast, so it's more Whisky a Go Go. Similar stuff, though, yeah?

I'm kind of careful about throwing that "punk" label around anymore as it's come to mean lightweight sissies like Greenday or (even worse) Blink-182. I wouldn't want anyone to think a fine band like X was in the same league as a bunch of corporate rockers.

Imitationangel -- X was one of the best. They still tour from time to time, actually. If I weren't pushing 40-years-old, I might try to go see a show sometime!

Danny Thornton -- Glad you liked it. Ah, now your mission is clear -- rush out any buy some albums, yeah?

Fun trivia - Exene used to me married to Viggo Mortenson, of The Lord of the Rings movie fame. I think they have a son together.

Yep, and she sued him for more child support not long ago...
